Certified Volunteer Tutor Training

Literacy in Action

Literacy in Action

We welcome people who want to help people. The main requirement is a caring heart. You don’t need a background in education. You don’t need to be bilingual.

BASIC LITERACY (BL): This workshop helps volunteer tutors work one-to-one with English speaking adults who read and write at or below the sixth-grade level. It is based on training developed by Literacy Volunteers of America and uses a variety of approaches to help adults develop their reading skills. Graphic organizers help with writing skills.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL): Volunteer tutors are trained in many ways to teach English to their students, in one-to-one sessions, regardless of their student’s first language or proficiency in English. Tutors learn how to use English to teach English. The focus of the training is on developing students’ listening, comprehension, and speaking skills. Knowledge of another language is NOT required.

We welcome volunteers. Our workshops are not designed for professional development. We cannot train paid teachers or paid staff from other types of services providers.
